Peel 800 g potatoes and cut into rough 3 cm cubes. Boil until tender in lightly salted water for 15-18 minutes.
Drain the potatoes and let them steam dry for a minute. Mash them together with 50 g butter and 1 dl whole milk until creamy, and season with 1 tsp salt and 1 tsp pepper.
Slice 400 g sausages into rounds about 1 cm thick, and finely chop 1 pcs onion and 2 clove garlic.
Coarsely grate 150 g cheddar so the cheese is ready for the topping.
Cooking in the Air Fryer
Preheat the air fryer to 180 °C.
Toss the sausage slices, onion and garlic with 1 tbsp olive oil in an oven-proof dish that fits in the basket. Sauté in the air fryer at 180 °C for 6 minutes, stirring halfway through.
Stir 800 g baked beans in tomato sauce, 1 tbsp tomato purée, 1 tsp smoked paprika and 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce into the dish, and spread the filling in an even layer.
Spread the mashed potato over the filling in an even layer, and drag a fork through the surface to create ridges.
Sprinkle the grated cheddar evenly over the mash, so the whole surface is covered.
Bake in the air fryer at 180 °C for 14 minutes, until the cheese has melted and turned golden, and the filling is bubbling at the edges.
Serving
Let the dish rest for 5 minutes to let the layers settle. Sprinkle with 1 tbsp chives and serve straight from the dish.
Notes
Tips for the perfect result:
Drag a fork through the mashed potato before you sprinkle on the cheese. The ridges catch the hot air and turn extra golden and crispy.Variation:
Swap the sausages for chorizo for a spicier twist, or use smoked sausages and a pinch of chilli flakes in the filling.Serving:
Serve with a simple green salad or pickled red onion to cut through the rich cheese.Portion size:
If your air fryer is smaller, you can make the dish in two batches or divide it between two smaller dishes.
