Why make Air Fryer Root Vegetables?

Cooking root vegetables in an air fryer is not only time-saving; it is also a healthier way to achieve the perfect texture. The air fryer requires significantly less oil than traditional deep frying, which results in a product with lower calorie content and less fat. This means you can enjoy the lovely crispiness and deep flavour of root vegetables without the health concerns often associated with deep-fried food. In addition, the air fryer’s technology allows for even heat circulation, ensuring that every single root vegetable is cooked evenly and crisp.

What flavour profile do root vegetables have?

Root vegetables, which include carrots, parsnips, sweet potatoes and beetroot, are known for their naturally sweet and earthy notes. When cooked, their sweetness intensifies, creating a pleasant contrast to the slightly bitter and nutty undertone often found in such vegetables. The beetroot’s almost wine-like flavour and the sweet potato’s creamy consistency perfectly complement the more subtle taste of carrots and parsnips.

I recommend this elegant Syrah for our air fryer root vegetables

Root vegetables have a natural sweetness and a deep, earthy character – and that calls for a wine with matching complexity. A Syrah from Crozes-Hermitage has exactly the peppery, dark berry notes and soft tannins that play beautifully against the caramelised sweetness of the carrots and the wine-like depth of the beetroot. When the root vegetables are served with leg of lamb or roast beef, the wine lifts the whole meal to a new level. I can warmly recommend Crozes-Hermitage La Matinière Rouge 2022 – an elegant and well-balanced wine that turns the everyday dinner into a little celebration.

To enhance the flavour and add visual appeal, root vegetables can be served with various toppings or dips. A classic topping could be a sprinkle of fresh herbs such as parsley or rosemary, which add both colour and a fresh note of flavour. Parmesan or feta cheese are also popular choices that provide a lovely salty contrast to the sweetness of the root vegetables. As for dips, a creamy hummus or a spicy aioli are ideal companions. They complement the rich flavour profile of the root vegetables and add a delicious creamy texture to the crunchy side dish.

Try marinating them in a mix of maple syrup and Dijon mustard before cooking. This adds a lovely balance between sweetness and sharpness to the natural depth of flavour of the root vegetables. It also creates a caramelised surface that is utterly irresistible

Tips and tricks from the author: Morten Jensen

What meat do you serve with Air Fryer Root Vegetables?

Air fryer root vegetables can easily be combined with a wide range of meat dishes. They go especially well with robust types of meat such as roast beef or leg of lamb, where their sweetness can balance the more umami-rich and fatty meat dishes. For a lighter meal, they can also be served with grilled chicken breast or a juicy pork chop. The versatility of root vegetables makes them an ideal side dish that can be adapted to the flavour profile of any main course.

Conclusion on Air Fryer Root Vegetables

Cooking root vegetables in an air fryer is an excellent way to create healthy, tasty dishes quickly and easily. This method preserves the vegetables’ natural sweetness while adding a desirable crispiness that makes them a joy to eat. With the option to experiment with different spices, toppings and dips, as well as the option to serve them with a wealth of meat dishes, root vegetables cooked in the air fryer are a versatile and satisfying choice for any occasion.

Frequently Asked Questions
