What is the story behind the traditional potato gratin?

The history of potato gratin, also known as “Gratin Dauphinois” in France, dates back to 1788 in the Dauphiné region. The dish is known for its simple yet rich recipe that celebrates potato and cream in harmony, often enhanced with a subtle hint of garlic and a golden, cheesy top.

It has served as a cornerstone of both rustic and finer French cuisine, and over the years its popularity has spread globally, inspiring countless variations of the dish.

I recommend this elegant Chardonnay for our creamy potato gratin

Potato gratin is a rich, creamy dish made with cream, cheese, and garlic – and here it’s all about finding a wine with enough body to match. I love serving a barrel-aged Chardonnay with it, because its round, buttery fruit and discreet oak notes mirror the gratin’s French soul beautifully. The notes of ripe apple, vanilla, and a slightly nutty finish make the pairing almost inevitable. I warmly recommend Louis Latour Grand Ardèche Chardonnay 2023 – a classic Burgundian Chardonnay from the Ardèche valley that lifts the gratin to new heights.

Why make potato gratin in the air fryer?

As the air fryer has made its way into Danish home kitchens, this potato gratin recipe has been reinvented in a way that suits your and my sometimes far-too-busy lifestyle without compromising on flavor. The air fryer, known for its efficiency and its ability to add an extra dimension of crispiness to food, is the perfect device for preparing potato gratin quickly and easily. By using muffin tins, individual portions of the gratin can be prepared, which not only ensures a faster cooking time but also an appealing presentation and even crispiness.

What are the benefits of Potato Gratin in the Air Fryer?

  • Faster Cooking: The air fryer significantly reduces the cooking time, making it an ideal method for quick dinner solutions.
  • Crispy Texture: The circulating heat in the air fryer ensures an evenly crispy surface, which is hard to achieve in a traditional oven.
  • Portion Control: Using muffin tins makes it easy to serve individual portions, perfect for small households or as a side dish for festive meals.

Tips and Tricks for the Perfect Potato Gratin

  • Thinly Sliced Potatoes: Use a mandoline to ensure evenly thin slices for consistent cooking and texture.
  • Rich in Flavor: Adding spices such as nutmeg, fresh herbs, or even a little truffle oil can lift the flavor to new heights.
  • The Magic of Cheese: A blend of cheeses, such as gruyère and parmesan, adds depth and a beautiful golden crust.
  • Experiment: Don’t be afraid to experiment with different types of cream or milk alternatives for a lighter version.

This little trick can really make a big difference in flavor! To take your potato gratin to the next level, try infusing the cream with flavor before mixing it with the potatoes. Gently warm the cream together with spices such as garlic, fresh thyme, rosemary, or bay leaves. Let it simmer for a few minutes to allow the flavors to develop. This step adds depth and complexity to the finished gratin, making every bite even more flavorful. Remember to remove the whole spices before pouring the mixture over the potatoes.
