Why make scalloped potatoes in the air fryer?

Using an air fryer significantly reduces the cooking time, and you get a lovely, crispy surface and juicy creamy potatoes in the air fryer. This means the dish not only becomes lighter, but also gets a delicious texture that is hard to achieve with traditional methods.

What gives the dish its flavor character?

Scalloped potatoes are the essence of comfort food. They are creamy, with a rich, deep flavor that comes from a good blend of cream and spices like garlic, thyme, and rosemary. When made in an air fryer, the lightly crispy surface adds a welcome textural contrast to the soft, creamy interior. This method also brings out a lightly roasted flavor note that enhances the dish’s overall flavor profile.

I recommend this elegant white wine for our creamy scalloped potatoes

When we make classic, flavorful scalloped potatoes in the air fryer, it’s always nice to have a balanced and crisp white wine to balance the richness of the dish. I can warmly recommend Montes Alpha Chardonnay 2022 – it rounds off the meal perfectly. Cheers!

Where do scalloped potatoes come from?

Scalloped potatoes, or gratin potatoes as they are also known, have their roots in French cuisine under the name “Gratin Dauphinois”. The dish was first mentioned in 1788, in connection with a dinner hosted by Charles-Henri, the Duke of Clermont-Tonnerre. The traditional recipe consists of slices of raw potatoes baked in a dish with cream or a blend of cream and milk, often with the addition of garlic and cheese. Over the years, the dish has spread globally and found local variations.

What do you serve with scalloped potatoes?

The dish is incredibly versatile and can be served with a variety of sides to create a complete meal. Traditionally, they are served with a piece of roasted or braised meat, such as a tender steak or slow-roasted lamb, where the creaminess of the dish complements the robust flavor of the meat. In Denmark, we often serve glazed ham with this dish.

Fry a few pieces of bacon in the air fryer before making the potatoes. Sprinkle the bacon on top before serving. It dresses up the dish and tastes perfect!
