Why make Walnut Buns in the Air Fryer?

An air fryer offers a quick and energy-efficient way to bake walnut buns. As the hot air circulates around the small balls of dough, you achieve even baking and a perfectly golden-brown crust. This makes the air fryer an excellent alternative to the oven, as it reduces the cooking time and saves on energy use. This method also lets you prepare a smaller number of buns at a time, ideal for smaller households or as a supplement to a larger bake.

Why use walnuts in buns?

Walnuts have a natural, delicate flavour and a characteristic crunchy texture that gives any baked good a special lift. When used in buns, the walnuts add a rich, nutty flavour that complements the airy bread. Their crunch also adds a lovely contrast to the soft bun, making every bite exciting and satisfying. In addition, walnuts have a number of health benefits, including being rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and minerals, which makes them a nutritious and tasty addition to your diet.

I recommend this fresh morning cup to go with our crisp walnut buns

Walnut buns have a deep, nutty flavour and a light sweetness that really puts demands on the coffee – it needs body and balance, but without overpowering the buns’ delicate character. A medium-roast Arabica with soft acidity and a fine, nutty aftertaste is the perfect match. I can warmly recommend Freehand Gently coffee beans – 1 kg – it meets the walnuts at eye level and turns the breakfast table into a little experience.

Which flavour variations of walnut buns can you make?

There are many ways to vary the flavour of walnut buns:

  • Almond and walnut buns:Add chopped almonds together with the walnuts in the dough to add a subtle sweetness and extra crispness. The almonds’ light flavour gives a fine balance to the more earthy walnuts.
  • Pistachio and walnut buns:Replace half of the walnuts with coarsely chopped pistachios to create a pale green colour and a richer, almost buttery flavour. The pistachios’ unique sweetness harmonises beautifully with the walnut’s earthy character.
  • Walnut buns with dried fruit:Add dried cranberries, apricots or raisins to the dough together with the walnuts. The natural sweetness of the fruit adds a slight tartness and an extra dimension to the bun’s flavour.

Which jam or cheese pairs well with this particular bun?

Walnut buns offer a versatile base for many toppings. If you want a sweet combination, try an apricot or orange marmalade. The sweet and slightly tart flavour of the marmalade highlights the rich flavour of the walnuts. For cheese lovers, brie or a mild goat’s cheese are ideal companions. Both cheeses melt beautifully into the bun’s texture and offer a delicate contrast to the walnut flavour. A stronger cheese such as blue cheese or cheddar can also add a more intense flavour experience for those who prefer a more complex layer of flavour.

Let the dough cold-rise in the fridge overnight. This extends the rising time and brings out the flavour of the walnuts. At the same time, the buns become more airy.
