What is the story behind cinnamon rolls?
Cinnamon rolls have a long history that goes back in time. Originally known as “kanelsnegle” in Denmark and “kanelbulle” in Sweden (the ones you know from IKEA with sugar on top), this treat has become a staple of the coffee and bakery culture in Scandinavia and has spread to other parts of the world with great success. Traditionally baked in the oven, cinnamon rolls have been given a modern twist with the introduction of the air fryer.

I recommend this warm and spiced tea with our cinnamon rolls
Cinnamon rolls and a steaming cup of spiced tea are, in my opinion, one of the most harmonious combinations you can find. The warm cinnamon in the rolls is beautifully enhanced by teas with spicy notes – and here FairTea Winter Spice tea bags are an obvious choice. They offer a lovely blend of warm spices like cinnamon, ginger, and clove that pair perfectly with the sweet cinnamon filling and the soft glaze. I can warmly recommend FairTea Winter Spice tea bags – the perfect companion for an afternoon with freshly baked goods from the air fryer.
Variations of cinnamon rolls in the air fryer
While the classic cinnamon roll is a favorite for many, there are countless ways to explore different flavors and variations of this beloved pastry. Here are some ideas to give them a twist:
- Nuts and Raisins: Add a little crunch and sweetness by mixing chopped nuts, such as walnuts or pecans, and juicy raisins into the filling. This adds an extra dimension of texture and flavor to your cinnamon rolls.
- Orange and Lemon: Fresh citrus zest or orange zest grated into the filling can add a fresh, tangy contrast to the sweet cinnamon. Try also adding a little freshly squeezed lemon or orange juice to the glaze for extra freshness.
- Cardamom and Ginger: Replace or supplement the cinnamon with spicy cardamom and grated ginger for a more exotic flavor profile. These spices add warmth and depth to your cinnamon rolls and give them a unique taste.
- Chocolate and Caramel: Who can resist the combination of chocolate and caramel? Add small pieces of dark chocolate or chopped caramel to the filling for an extra delicious and sinful twist on the classic cinnamon roll.
- Peanut Butter and Nutella: For the chocolate and nut lovers out there, why not add a layer of creamy peanut butter or Nutella under the filling? This will add an extra dimension of flavor and make them even more irresistible.
No matter which variation you choose, the possibilities for experimenting with flavors and textures are almost endless. Let your creativity run wild and create your own unique versions of this classic favorite – now as cinnamon rolls in the air fryer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, you can easily bake frozen cinnamon rolls without thawing them first. Bake them at 175–180 °C (350 °F) for about 7–10 minutes, until golden.
Ready-made canned cinnamon rolls (e.g., Pillsbury) usually need 6–8 minutes at 180 °C (350 °F). Check them after 5 minutes.
Avoid overbaking them (start with 8 minutes and keep an eye on them). Placing them close together in the pan helps them retain moisture and stay soft.
