What is the story of churros?
Churros are a classic Spanish treat believed to have their roots in Spain – at least in the form we know today. But the pastry may trace its roots back to Portugal or perhaps even all the way back to China. These crispy and sweet treats have been part of Spanish culture for centuries and are loved by people all over the world today. They have evolved into an iconic part of Spanish cuisine and now come in many different variations – from long and thin to thicker and larger versions, and now also with new cooking methods, like churros in the air fryer.
Tips for serving churros in the air fryer
Churros in the air fryer are delicious on their own, but they can also be served with various dips or toppings to add extra flavor and variety. Here are some ideas for how to enjoy them best:
- Dip them in warm chocolate sauce, caramel or raspberry jam for a sweet and delicious flavor experience.
- Sprinkle them with a cinnamon-sugar blend or powdered sugar for a classic and traditional taste.
- Serve them with a scoop of ice cream on top for a refreshing and indulgent dessert experience.
I recommend this fresh orange soda for our crispy churros
Churros are sweet, warm and smell of cinnamon – and I think the best companion is something that cuts through the sweetness with a fresh, fizzy flavor. An ice-cold orange soda with natural fruit flavor provides exactly the contrast that elevates the snacking experience. I can warmly recommend Naturfrisk Appelsinbrus – its clean, light citrus bitterness matches the cinnamon sugar in the churros perfectly and makes the combination something special.
New York Style with Salted Caramel Dip
For the dipping sauce, you can make a delicious salted caramel dipping sauce. Melt sugar in a saucepan until it turns golden and caramelized. Then add a little cream and a pinch of salt to create the perfect balance between sweet and salty. This creamy and rich dip will be the ideal companion to your New York Style Churros!
Sprinkle with a little finely grated orange zest. This extra ingredient adds a fresh citrus aroma that complements the sweetness of the churros perfectly and gives them an extra dimension of flavor.

FAQ
Air-fry the churros at 180 °C for about 8-10 minutes, until golden and crispy. Preheat the air fryer first so they get a crisp outside right from the start. Check them after 8 minutes, as the time can vary a little from one air fryer to another.
Pipe them straight into the basket with a little space between them, so the hot air can circulate around each churro. It is better to cook them in batches than to overfill the basket. That way they also turn evenly crispy all the way around.
Roll the churros in the mix of 50 g sugar and 1 tsp cinnamon while they are still warm – that is when the sugar sticks best. If you want to warm them up later, give them 2-3 minutes at 180 °C in the air fryer and roll them in the cinnamon sugar again straight away.

How to make it
- Start by preheating your air fryer to 180 °C.

- In a saucepan, bring 240 ml water , 2 tbsp sugar , 30 g butter and ¼ tsp salt to a boil over medium heat.Let it boil until the butter has melted and the sugar has dissolved.

- Remove the saucepan from the heat and add 130 g plain flour all at once.Stir quickly and constantly until the dough forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the pan.

- Let the dough cool for about 5 minutes so the egg doesn’t scramble. Add 1 pcs egg and 1 tsp vanilla extract , and stir well until the dough is smooth and even.

- Transfer the dough to a piping bag fitted with a star nozzle.

- Cut a piece of baking paper to fit the bottom of the basket. Pipe churros about 10 cm long onto the paper, 2–3 cm apart, and lightly brush or spray them with oil. Lift the paper with the churros into the hot basket (never put empty paper in). If they don’t all fit, air-fry them in 2 batches.

- Air-fry the churros at 180 °C for about 8-10 minutes, or until golden and crispy. Carefully turn them after about 5 minutes.Start the kitchen timer here
