Where does cinnamon bread come from?
Cinnamon bread, as we know and love it today, has roots that stretch back to various cultures and traditions around the world. Its origin cannot be attributed to a single place, as the idea of combining bread with cinnamon and sugar has developed in parallel across many societies.
In Scandinavia, for example, cinnamon buns are a staple of coffee culture, known as ‘kanelbullar’ in Sweden. In the USA, cinnamon rolls, a sweeter and often more decadent version, have found a special place in Americans’ hearts, especially as a breakfast or dessert. This spread and adaptation over time has led to a diversity of recipes and preparation methods, all celebrating the warm, spiced flavor of cinnamon.
I recommend this mild coffee with our airy cinnamon bread
Cinnamon bread and a good cup of coffee are, for me, one of life’s simple pleasures. The warm cinnamon and sweet glaze call for a coffee with roundness and balance – not too strong, not too mild. A medium-roast Arabica brings out the warm spice notes without overpowering them, and its soft acidity cleans up nicely after the glaze. I warmly recommend Freehand Gently coffee beans – 1 kg.; freshly ground, it’s the perfect companion to a good piece of cinnamon bread from the airfryer.
Why make cinnamon bread in the airfryer?
Making cinnamon bread in an airfryer is a modern twist that offers several advantages compared to traditional baking methods. First, the preparation time in an airfryer is often shorter, which means you can enjoy your cinnamon bread sooner. This is especially handy for those with a busy lifestyle. Second, the airfryer provides even heat circulation, which results in evenly baked bread with a perfectly golden and crispy crust. In addition, using an airfryer is a more energy-efficient method and requires less heating of the kitchen, making it an ideal solution during the warmer months.
How do you make a healthier version of cinnamon bread in the airfryer?
To adapt cinnamon bread to a healthier diet, a few simple adjustments to the ingredients can make a big difference. Start by replacing the white flour with whole-grain or almond flour for a higher fiber content and nutrient density. Reduce the amount of sugar, or use alternatives such as coconut sugar or a liquid sweetener like agave syrup to lower the glycemic index. You can also replace regular butter with unsalted plant-based butter and choose a plant-based milk. For the glaze, you can make a healthier version by mixing Greek yogurt with powdered sugar and vanilla extract, which gives a creamy and less sugary topping.
What variants of cinnamon bread in the airfryer are there?
There are countless variations of cinnamon bread that can be adapted to personal preferences or dietary needs.
Protein-rich cinnamon bread
Add protein powder to the dough to create a more filling and nutritious bread. This is ideal for fitness enthusiasts or those who want a protein boost.
Vegan cinnamon bread
Replace eggs and dairy products with vegan alternatives. Use a flaxseed egg (a mixture of ground flaxseeds and water) as a substitute for eggs, and plant-based milk and butter. This ensures the bread is suitable for those following a vegan lifestyle.
Gluten-free cinnamon bread
For those with gluten intolerance, replace regular flour with a gluten-free flour blend. It’s important to adjust the liquid content as needed, since gluten-free flour often absorbs more liquid.
Try sprinkling a mixture of chopped nuts (such as pistachios or walnuts) on top of the glaze. This adds a lovely texture contrast and a nutty depth to the sweet glaze.
