Why make stuffed peppers in the air fryer?

In recent years, the air fryer has made its way into many Danish kitchens, and not without reason. This appliance makes it possible to cook food quickly and with minimal use of oil, while the result is often both crispy and juicy. There are several good reasons to use an air fryer for your stuffed peppers:

Faster cooking time

The air fryer significantly shortens the cooking time compared to a traditional oven. While stuffed peppers typically take 30-40 minutes in an oven, they can be ready in just 12-15 minutes in an air fryer. This is especially handy on busy weekdays, when you want a quick but still healthy meal.

What should you drink with it?

With stuffed peppers, which are full of flavour and often have a Mediterranean twist, a good red wine is essential. I recommend a classic Côtes du Rhône. It has the body and fruitiness to match the baked peppers and the spiced filling perfectly.

Less oil and a healthier result

One of the biggest advantages of the air fryer is that it requires very little oil. This makes the dish both lighter and healthier without compromising on flavour. You still achieve a golden, crispy surface on the peppers, even though minimal oil is used.

Perfect texture

When you cook stuffed peppers in the air fryer, you get a perfect combination of a crispy exterior and a juicy filling. The hot air in the air fryer circulates evenly, ensuring that the peppers cook uniformly. This means you avoid soft and soggy peppers.

Where do stuffed peppers in the air fryer come from?

Stuffed peppers have roots in various cuisines around the world, and they have become an integral part of both Mediterranean and Middle Eastern food culture. The basic elements – filling a vegetable with a flavourful mixture of meat, rice and spices – have existed for centuries, and they come in many variations.

Turkish and Greek origins

In Turkey and Greece, stuffed vegetables, also known as dolma, are a widespread dish where peppers, tomatoes and vine leaves are all filled with various mixtures of rice, herbs and meat. Here, herbs such as dill, parsley and mint are often used to add freshness and aroma to the dish.

Middle Eastern roots

In Middle Eastern cuisine, peppers are also often filled with spiced meat and rice, and dried fruits such as raisins or pomegranate seeds are sometimes added to create a sweetness that balances the spicy flavours. Various nuts, such as pine nuts or almonds, can also be added for extra texture.

European variations

In Southern Europe, particularly in Spain and Italy, stuffed peppers are also part of the food culture. In Italy, ingredients such as tomatoes, mozzarella and olive oil are typically added, while Spanish versions may include chorizo or serrano ham for a more intense flavour.

The versatility found in the various versions of stuffed peppers has made the dish popular in many countries and cultures.

What variations can you make of stuffed peppers in the air fryer?

One of the great advantages of stuffed peppers is that they can be adapted to any taste or dietary preference. Here are some popular variations you can try:

Vegetarian stuffed peppers

If you prefer a meat-free version, there are many delicious options. For example, you can fill the peppers with quinoa, chickpeas or lentils. These protein sources can be combined with vegetables such as spinach, mushrooms and courgettes, and seasoned with herbs like basil or thyme. A topping of crumbled feta or grated cheese adds extra flavour.

With fish

Another exciting variation is to use fish as filling. Tuna or salmon can be combined with ingredients such as tomatoes, red onion and olives to create a fresh and light version of the dish. A dressing with lemon and dill can give the flavour a lift.

Spicy version with a Mexican twist

If you like spicy food, you can give your stuffed peppers a Mexican twist. Use minced meat (or plant-based alternatives), black beans, corn and spices such as cumin and chilli. Top them with guacamole, soured cream and coriander for an explosion of flavour and texture.

Cheese-filled

For a more decadent version, you can choose to fill the peppers with different types of cheese that melt and give a creamy texture. You can use cream cheese combined with parmesan or cheddar to create a rich and delicious dish. Serve with a fresh salad to balance the meal.

Low-carb

For those following a low-carb diet, stuffed peppers can easily be adapted by avoiding rice and instead using minced meat, cheese and vegetables. Add avocado and soured cream as a topping for extra richness and flavour.

Asian

If you want to try something different, you can experiment with Asian flavours. Use ingredients such as ginger, garlic, soy sauce and sesame oil in the filling. You can fill the peppers with a mixture of chicken, rice and vegetables such as carrots and peas. Serve with a soy sauce-based dressing to complete the dish.

Try brushing the inside of the peppers with a little olive oil and sprinkling a pinch of salt before filling them. This enhances the pepper’s natural sweetness and adds an extra layer of flavour
