This recipe will explore why the air fryer method is ideal for homemade spring rolls. Dive into the origins of spring rolls, and highlight some delicious filling variations that can be adapted to any taste.

Why make homemade spring rolls in the air fryer?

Preparing homemade spring rolls in an air fryer offers several advantages. First, by using air fryer technology, you can achieve the desired crispy exterior without using large amounts of oil, which makes the dish healthier. In addition, the air fryer ensures even cooking, which is crucial for perfectly cooked rolls. It is also time-saving, as preparation and cooking happen faster than in a traditional oven or with deep-frying.

What kind of dish is a spring roll?

Spring rolls are small rolls of thin dough, filled with a mixture of meat and vegetables, which are then fried or baked until crispy. They are often served as an appetizer or snack and can be dipped in various sauces. The wrapper, traditionally made from wheat or rice, encloses a juicy and flavorful filling that can vary greatly depending on regional preferences and personal tastes.

Where do spring rolls come from?

The recipe has a rich history and is believed to originate from China. Their name refers to the Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, where they were traditionally prepared as part of the celebrations. They later spread to other Asian countries, each adapting the recipe to local taste preferences, resulting in a wealth of variations. Today, spring rolls are enjoyed in many forms around the world, from the classic Chinese versions to the fresh Vietnamese spring rolls.

What flavor fillings are there?

There are countless filling variations for this dish that can be adapted to any cuisine and taste. Two popular variations are:

Vegetarian version: By replacing the meat with a rich blend of roasted vegetables such as sweet potatoes, mushrooms, and spinach, you achieve a nourishing and colorful vegetarian variant. Adding spices like coriander and a touch of chili further enriches the flavor and provides a lovely balance between sweetness and spice.

Chicken and Cashew version: For a heartier flavor variation, chicken can be combined with cashews for a crunchy texture and a nutty flavor. A hint of hoisin sauce adds a sweet and spicy dimension to the filling, making these spring rolls irresistible.

To give your spring rolls an authentic Asian touch, try marinating your filling in a blend of soy sauce, sesame oil, and a splash of rice vinegar just before cooking.

These crispy spring rolls are made with ready-made filo pastry for ease and speed. Cooked in an air fryer, they’re a lighter alternative to the traditionally deep-fried versions, but still just as delicious.
