Nachos in the air fryer are the fastest way to crispy tortilla chips with melted cheese – ready in just 5-7 minutes at 180 degrees. I always use parchment paper on the bottom so the cheese doesn’t make a mess of the basket. Why You Should Make Nachos in the Air Fryer (Ready in 5 Minutes!)
When it comes to nachos in the air fryer, you get several clear advantages over the oven: it only takes 5-7 minutes, you skip preheating, and the chips get extra crispy thanks to the hot air circulation. My best trick is to layer cheese both under and over the chips – that way the cheese acts as glue and holds everything in place instead of flying around. On top of that, cleanup is minimal – just line the basket with a piece of parchment paper, and you avoid the cheese making a mess of everything.
- Quick preparation time:An air fryer can cook nachos in just a few minutes, making it easy to whip up a quick snack or starter without waiting for the oven to heat up.
- Even heat distribution:The air fryer circulates hot air around the food, ensuring the nachos turn out crispy and the cheese melts evenly. This eliminates the risk of soggy or burnt chips.
- Healthier choice:The air fryer needs minimal or no oil, which can make your nachos a bit healthier than those made in a traditional oven.
Where Does This Dish Come From?
Nachos originated in northern Mexico, near the border with Texas. The dish was invented in 1943 by Ignacio “Nacho” Anaya, who worked at a restaurant in the town of Piedras Negras. The story goes that a group of American soldiers’ wives visited the restaurant after closing time, and since the kitchen was closed, Anaya improvised by cutting tortilla chips into pieces, topping them with grated cheese and jalapeños, and baking them quickly. This simple but tasty snack quickly became popular and was given the name “Nacho’s Special,” which was later shortened to “nachos.”
I Recommend This Characterful IPA for Our Nachos
Nachos are a classic snack that calls for a drink with character and freshness. A cold IPA is the ideal companion. I can warmly recommend Herslev IPA – the beer’s distinct hop bitterness and fruity notes play perfectly off the salty tortilla chips and melted cheese. It’s a laid-back and delicious combination that makes your snack night even better. Cheers, Morten.
What Variations of Nachos Can You Make?
Nachos are incredibly versatile and can be adapted to taste and preference. Here are some popular variations:
- Classic nachos:The traditional version with tortilla chips, melted cheese and jalapeños.
- Meat nachos:Add chicken, beef or pulled pork for extra protein and flavor.
- Vegetarian nachos:Use black beans, corn and a variety of vegetables like bell pepper and onion.
- Vegan nachos:Swap the cheese for vegan cheese and add plant-based proteins like tofu or tempeh.
- Fruity nachos:Experiment with sweet and salty combinations by adding fruits like mango or pineapple alongside traditional toppings.
What Dips to Serve with Nachos?
Dips are an important part of the nachos experience, and the right dips can really elevate the dish. Here are some of the most popular dips served with nachos:
- Guacamole:A creamy avocado dip that adds a fresh and delicious flavor to nachos.
- Salsa:Tomato-based salsas can range from mild to very spicy and add a tangy flavor.
- Crème fraîche:This cooling dip gives a lovely contrast to the spicy nachos.
- Queso:A warm, cheese-based dip that’s perfect for those who can’t get enough cheese.
- Salsa verde:A green tomatillo-based dip that’s a bit tangier than regular salsa.
Try serving the dish with an authentic Mexican beer. A cold beer like Corona, Modelo or Pacifico can be the perfect companion for your nachos, as they complement the spicy and salty flavors with their refreshing, light character. Also try adding a slice of fresh lime to the beer for an extra refreshing taste.

Nachos in the Air Fryer: The Perfect Friday Snack
Nachos in the air fryer are my absolute go-to when it needs to be quick on a Friday night. In just 5-7 minutes at 180 degrees, you get crispy chips with perfectly melted cheese – without even turning on the oven. My best tip is to use parchment paper on the bottom and layer cheese between the layers, so the chips don’t fly around. Try topping with leftover chicken breast from the air fryer for a heartier version the whole family loves. Whether you keep it simple with cheese and jalapeños or go all-in with beef and guacamole, nachos in the air fryer are a sure winner.
Frequently Asked Questions
Nachos in the air fryer typically take 5-7 minutes at 180 degrees. Keep an eye on the cheese – once it’s melted and lightly golden, your nachos are ready. The time may vary slightly depending on your air fryer model.
Yes, it’s recommended to use parchment paper in the bottom of the air fryer basket. It prevents melted cheese from making a mess of the basket and makes cleanup much easier. Cut the parchment paper to fit, and make sure air can still circulate along the edges.
The fan can indeed swirl light chips around, but the trick is to layer grated cheese both under and over the chips so they stick together. Feel free to build two layers with cheese in between, and everything will stay in place.
