This post dives into the origin of the muesli bar, its popularity, health considerations, and gives you tips and tricks for making them in your air fryer.

Where does the muesli bar come from?

The history of the muesli bar can be traced back to the early 20th century. That’s when the Swiss doctor Maximilian Bircher-Benner invented muesli, a mixture of oats, nuts, and fruit with milk, as part of a diet plan for his patients. However, it wasn’t until the 1970s that the concept was transformed into bar form, making it easy to transport and consume on the go. Since then, the muesli bar has evolved into countless variations and has become a staple in snack drawers and sports bags around the world.

I recommend this fresh apple juice with our muesli bars in the air fryer

When I snack on a homemade muesli bar with honey, nuts, and dried fruit, a glass of cold apple juice is the perfect companion. The natural fruit sweetness mirrors the bars’ ingredients and gives a fresh feeling that suits the breakfast table just as well as the school lunchbox. I can warmly recommend the Naturfrisk Apple Juice fruit drink – a pure and natural apple juice without artificial additives, which tastes wonderful with an energizing muesli bar.

Why make muesli bars in the air fryer?

With the invention and popularization of the air fryer, all home cooks now have the opportunity to experiment with and improve this healthy muesli bar recipe, muesli bars in the air fryer. Muesli bars in the air fryer offer a faster cooking time and a healthier approach to cooking by minimizing the use of oil, which appeals to all types of health-conscious consumers, including athletes and parents.

Is a muesli bar healthy?

Muesli bars in the air fryer are known for their health benefits, especially when they are homemade. By preparing them in an air fryer, you can reduce the fat content even further, as it requires little to no oil. The ingredients in a homemade muesli bar, such as rolled oats, nuts, and dried fruit, offer a rich source of fiber, protein, healthy fats, and essential vitamins. However! It’s important that you pay attention to added sugar and the calorie content, especially in the store-bought versions.

It’s because of their energizing properties and easily digestible carbohydrates, which provide quick fuel during training or competitions. That’s why muesli bars are especially popular among athletes. For children, they’re a practical and tasty air fryer snack that can be adapted into countless flavor combinations. Which makes them a hit in school lunchboxes, or a quick snack when the kids come home from school.

Chocolate and Sea Salt Muesli Bars

  • Addition: Add 1/2 dl chopped dark chocolate and an extra pinch of sea salt to the dry ingredients.
  • Note: The chocolate provides a lovely sweetness and contrast to the sea salt, which enhances the flavors.

Peanut Butter and Banana Muesli Bars

  • Substitution/Addition: Replace 1/4 dl of the honey with creamy peanut butter and add 1/2 dl dried banana in small pieces to the dry ingredients.
  • Note: Peanut butter adds a creamy texture and the banana pieces give a natural sweetness.

Coconut and Lime Muesli Bars

  • Addition: Add 1/2 dl finely grated coconut and the zest of 1 lime to the dry ingredients.
  • Note: The lime zest provides a fresh and tangy flavor that complements the sweetness of the coconut perfectly.

Apple and Cinnamon Muesli Bars

Superseed Muesli Bars

  • Addition: Add 1/4 dl chia seeds and 1/4 dl flax seeds to the dry ingredients.

Extra little tip for this recipe: Toast your nuts

This gives a deeper flavor to the nuts and provides an extra crunchy texture. It makes your muesli bars even more satisfying to chew. Just be careful not to burn them, as that can give a bitter taste.

Add a little orange zest and a sprinkle of sea salt. It lifts your muesli bar to the next flavor level.

Frequently Asked Questions
