What is the story of the bagel?
Its history spans centuries and continents. From its alleged origins in Poland to its journey with Jewish immigrants to the United States, this boiled-and-baked delicacy has found its way into hearts (and stomachs) all over the world. It has thus evolved from a traditional Jewish food into a global and modern sandwich bread, with New York often referred to as the modern mecca of the bagel.
About the air fryer bagels recipe
Baking bagels in an air fryer isn’t just easy, it’s also a fantastic way to get a crispy surface and a delicious interior without the hassle of a conventional oven. And the best part? It only takes about an hour and a half from start to finish.
I recommend this fresh coffee with our homemade bagels
A freshly baked bagel straight from the air fryer deserves the company of a really good cup of coffee. The medium-roast arabica has a soft, round flavor with fine notes of nuts and caramel that pairs perfectly with the bagel’s crispy crust and chewy interior – whether you top it with cream cheese, avocado or a sweet mascarpone. I warmly recommend Freehand Gently coffee beans – 1 kg. – an excellent everyday coffee that lifts the entire breakfast into a little moment of delicacy.
Toppings
This is where you can really let your creativity run free. A classic New York-style bagel is often topped with sesame seeds or poppy seeds, but why not try something new? Think cheddar cheese and jalapeño for a spicy twist, or maybe a sweet version with cinnamon and sugar.
Fillings
When it comes to fillings, the possibilities are endless — from the traditional cream cheese to more advanced spreads like sun-dried tomato and basil or even a sweet mascarpone and berry combination.
Experimenting with color in bagels can add a fun and artistic twist to your baking experience.

Author tip explained: Play with colors in your bagel baking
Let’s take the creative baking to a new level by introducing natural colorings into our bagel recipes. Adding color to your homemade bagel isn’t just a visual fireworks display, it’s a fantastic way to impress your guests and create Instagram-worthy breakfast moments 😉
How to add colors:
- Choose your color source: For natural colors you can use juice or powder from beetroot for pink/red, turmeric for yellow, spinach for green, blueberries for purple, or even activated charcoal for a dramatic black bagel.
- Add the color to the dough: Once you’ve mixed your dry ingredients, add your color source to the lukewarm water before combining it with the dry ingredients. This ensures the color is evenly distributed throughout the dough.
- Knead and admire: As you knead the dough, you’ll see how the color develops. Knead until the color is evenly distributed for a uniform look, or knead less for a marbled appearance.
- Bake with care: Remember that some natural colors may fade slightly when baked. To preserve the color’s intensity, you can brush your bagels with a thin layer of water or egg wash before baking them.
