Why make apple tart in the airfryer?

The airfryer has become a popular tool in Danish kitchens because of its versatility and speed. Baking an apple tart in an airfryer is not only easy, but it also gives you a crispy base without having to use much fat or preheat the oven for a long time. The airfryer works like a small convection oven, which means it provides even heat distribution and ensures that the tart is baked to perfection.

Another advantage of making apple tart in the airfryer is the time saved. Traditional apple tarts can take up to an hour to bake in a regular oven, but with an airfryer you can reduce the cooking time to around 25-30 minutes. That’s perfect if you want to make a quick dessert for your evening coffee or as a sweet treat for an unexpected guest.

I recommend this fruity liqueur for our apple tart

A warm apple tart straight from the airfryer is pure magic, and if you want to make the experience complete, a little liqueur on the side is the icing on the cake. I can warmly recommend Poire William pear liqueur in a gift box — cheers and enjoy.

In addition, the airfryer is more energy-efficient, as it uses less power and time compared to a traditional oven. This makes it an obvious choice when you want to make a quick and tasty tart without using unnecessary energy.

Where does this apple dish come from?

Apple tart, as we know it today, has roots in the European Middle Ages, but the version we see here is specifically Danish in its form and tradition. Denmark has a rich history when it comes to apple growing, and apple tart has long been a classic way to make the most of the season’s fresh apples.

The Danish apple tart is often simple and highlights the apples’ natural sweetness and tartness, unlike English apple pie, which often contains a thicker pastry and more spices, such as cinnamon and nutmeg. The Danish version is more minimalist and focuses on good quality ingredients. Traditionally, apples in Denmark were used in many different dishes, both sweet and savoury. Tarts have been a staple of Danish desserts since the 1700s.

Which Danish apple varieties can you use?

In Denmark, we’re lucky enough to have a wealth of different apple varieties that are perfect for apple tart. When making an apple tart, it’s important to choose apples that hold their shape during baking but also have a good balance between sweetness and tartness.

Belle de Boskoop is one of the most popular varieties for baking, as it has a firm structure and a tart flavour that’s perfect for tarts. Ingrid Marie is another classic that many Danes associate with autumn and baking. It has a sweetness that makes it well suited to dessert tarts without becoming too sweet. Gråsten is an older Danish variety, also known for its mild flavour and fine texture.

If you prefer a sweeter tart, you can also consider mixing different varieties, for example using a combination of Belle de Boskoop and Elstar to achieve the perfect flavour balance.

What can you serve with apple tart?

Apple tart is a versatile dessert that can be served in many ways. The most classic accompaniment to a Danish apple tart is a spoonful of crème fraîche. The tartness of the crème fraîche complements the tart and creates a harmonious balance in the flavour. If you want to make it a little more festive, you can serve it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, which provides a lovely contrast between the warm tart and the cold ice cream.

For those who want to add an extra touch of luxury, the tart can also be served with a dollop of whipped cream or a vanilla sauce. Some even add a sprinkle of cinnamon or chopped almonds as a garnish to give it a little extra texture and flavour.

Try brushing the apples with a little melted butter and sprinkling them with a bit of sugar or maple syrup before baking. It not only gives a beautiful, caramelised surface
