Why make air fryer brownies?
The heating time in an air fryer is shorter than in a traditional oven, and the energy consumption is significantly lower. The air fryer provides even heat circulation, which ensures uniform baking and a lovely crispy surface on your brownies. If you also like chocolate cake, try my chocolate cake with buttercream in the air fryer.
What kind of cake is a brownie?
Brownies are a thick, typically square chocolate cake that is both rich and dense, with a moist interior texture. They can be made either chewy or more cake-like depending on the recipe. The ingredients usually include chocolate or cocoa, butter, sugar, eggs and flour. Brownies can also contain nuts, chocolate chunks or other additions to enrich the flavour.
I recommend a walnut liqueur with brownies
For an intense and delicious chocolate brownie from the air fryer, there’s nothing better than a glass of sweet, mellow liqueur. I can warmly recommend this wonderful Walnut Liqueur 100ml, which has some fantastic notes that complement the baked chocolate to perfection. Enjoy!
Who invented it and where does the cake come from?
The history of brownies begins in the USA in the late 19th century. The first known brownie recipe appeared in “The Boston Cooking School Cook Book” by Fannie Merritt Farmer in 1896, but these were more like small cakes without chocolate. The chocolate version began to appear in cookbooks in the early 1900s.
How to make your brownies soft and fudgy with a crispy crust
To achieve perfect brownies in the air fryer, it’s important not to overbake them. Set the air fryer to a moderate temperature (around 160°C) and bake them for a shorter time than in a traditional oven. This helps preserve the moisture inside, while the hot circulating air creates a delicate, crispy exterior.
Which dark chocolate is best for air fryer brownies?
The choice of dark chocolate can range from 50% to 85% cocoa content depending on how intense a chocolate flavour you prefer. A higher cocoa content gives a deeper and less sweet flavour, which can balance the sweetness from the sugar in the recipe.
The best toppings for your brownies
Once the brownies are baked, they can be topped with various treats to add texture and flavour. Popular choices include chopped nuts, flaky salt, fresh berries, or even a dusting of icing sugar. For an extra decadent treat, a dollop of caramel or chocolate sauce can also be fantastic.
What do you serve with brownies?
Brownies can be enjoyed on their own or as part of an exquisite dessert. They are especially delicious served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, which melts gently over the warm cake. A dollop of whipped cream or fresh berries provides a lovely contrast to the rich chocolate. If you’re after something a little different, try my brookie in the air fryer – a brilliant combination of brownie and cookie.
Try whisking a teaspoon of Stroh rum into the whipped cream. It tastes fantastic and gives a little edge to both the cream and the chocolate.

Frequently asked questions
Brownies typically need 15-20 minutes at 160-165 degrees. Check with a toothpick after 15 minutes – it should come out with moist crumbs, but not wet batter.
A springform tin of about 20-21 cm or a silicone mould that fits in your air fryer basket is ideal. Make sure there’s air around the tin for even heat.
This is often due to too long a baking time. The air fryer circulates the heat efficiently, so it goes faster than in the oven. Take the brownie out while the centre is still a little soft – it will set further as it cools.
