There’s something truly special about autumn in Denmark. The leaves change colour, the air turns cooler, and the apple trees are bursting with juicy fruit. This time of year, I love tying on my apron and baking a batch of warm, fragrant apple muffins in the air fryer. Nothing spreads cosiness quite like the smell of cinnamon and baked apples filling the kitchen. Apple muffins in the air fryer aren’t just a delicious way to enjoy the season’s produce, but also a wonderful way to bring family and friends together around something homemade. Let me share my favourite ingredients, tips and tricks, so you too can bake the perfect apple muffins in your air fryer.

Key ingredients for Apple Muffins in the air fryer

Apples

The apples are, of course, the star of apple muffins. I prefer to use fresh, Danish apples, as they’re full of flavour and often locally grown. This not only gives a better taste experience, but also supports our local farmers.

Best Apple Varieties for Muffins

When it comes to baking, not all apples are created equal. I’ve had great success with varieties like Ingrid Marie, Belle de Boskoop and Elstar. Ingrid Marie is sweet and juicy with a light tartness that gives a nice balance in the muffins. Belle de Boskoop is more tart and holds its shape well during baking, giving lovely apple pieces in every bite. Elstar is known for its aromatic flavour and crispness, which also makes it ideal for baking.

I recommend this mild tea for our apple muffins

When serving these delicious apple muffins, I think a good cup of tea is just the right choice. I can highly recommend Just T Cheek To Cheek Vanilla tea – its mild vanilla flavour pairs beautifully with the apples.

Flour and Raising Agents

Flour and raising agents are the foundation of your muffins and affect both texture and volume.

Choosing the Right Flour

I recommend using organic plain flour for the best texture. If you’d like to add a nutty flavour and extra fibre, you can replace some of the flour with wholemeal flour or oats. This gives the muffins a more rustic and wholesome profile, which suits the autumn theme perfectly.

Sweeteners and Spices

Sweetness and spices are essential for bringing out the apples’ natural flavour.

Choosing Sweeteners

Brown sugar or cane sugar adds a deeper, caramel-like sweetness compared to regular white sugar. If you prefer natural sweeteners, honey or maple syrup can be good alternatives. They add not only sweetness, but also a unique flavour nuance that complements the apples.

Enhancing Flavour with Spices

Cinnamon is almost indispensable in apple muffins, but I also love adding a pinch of nutmeg and ground ginger for extra warmth. These spices add a depth of flavour that really brings out the apples and creates a cosy autumn feel.

Ingredients for Apple Muffins in the air fryer

Muffin Tins and Paper Cases

The right equipment can make a big difference to your baking experience.

Choosing the Right Muffin Tin

I prefer to use silicone muffin tins, as they’re non-stick and easy to work with. If you’re using metal tins, paper cases or a light greasing with butter or oil can stop the batter from sticking. The air fryer often requires smaller tins, so make sure your muffin tins fit inside it.

Fresh vs. Tinned Apples

The choice between fresh and tinned apples can affect both the flavour and texture of your muffins.

Benefits of Using Fresh Apples

Fresh, Danish apples give the best flavour and texture in your muffins. They retain their juiciness and contribute a natural sweetness that’s hard to match with tinned apples. By using the season’s produce, you also get a more authentic and fresh taste experience.

Tips and Tricks for Perfect Apple Muffins in the air fryer

Try letting the grated apples sit in a little lemon juice and brown sugar before folding them into the batter. This brings out the apples’ natural sweetness and adds a light caramelised flavour to the muffins. The lemon juice also stops the apples from browning, giving a fresher look and taste.

Tips and tricks from the author: Morten Jensen

Managing Moisture

Achieving the right moisture level in your muffins is crucial for a successful result.

Balanced Moisture in the Batter

Overmixing the batter can lead to tough and dry muffins. Only stir the ingredients together until just combined. For extra moisture, you can add ingredients like yoghurt, apple sauce or even a little grated courgette. These additions make your muffins extra moist without changing the flavour significantly.

Enhancing Flavour and Texture

Small additions can make a big difference to your muffins.

Incorporating Texture-Enhancing Ingredients

Chopped walnuts, almonds or hazelnuts add a lovely crunchy texture. Dried fruits like raisins or cranberries can add extra sweetness and chewiness. For a luxurious twist, you can add small pieces of dark chocolate or caramel. Feel free to sprinkle the tops of your muffins with a few oats or some cinnamon sugar for a crisp surface.

Final Thoughts

Baking apple muffins in the air fryer is a fantastic way to make the most of the season’s fresh apples. It’s quick, easy and fills the home with a wonderful autumn scent. With the right ingredients and a little love, you can create muffins that not only taste fantastic, but also spread cosiness and joy among those you share them with. So next time you have some apples to spare, why not try baking a batch of apple muffins? I’m sure you’ll love the result just as much as I do.
