Why make marble cake in the air fryer?

When it comes to baking, there are several benefits:

  • Faster cooking time: The air fryer significantly reduces the cooking time compared to a traditional oven. This is due to the rapid circulation of hot air, which bakes the cake evenly and efficiently.
  • Energy-saving: It uses less energy than a traditional oven, which can be an advantage both economically and environmentally.
  • Perfect result: You achieve even baking and a deliciously crisp surface on your cake, while it stays moist and delicious inside.

What kind of cake is a marble cake?

Marble cake is a fluffy, two-coloured cake known for its characteristic marbled pattern, created by mixing light and dark batter. The two most common flavours in marble cake are vanilla and chocolate, but there are many variations. The marbled effect is achieved by pouring the two types of batter alternately into the tin and then dragging a knife or fork through the batter to create the unique pattern.

I recommend this lovely vanilla tea with our classic marble cake

When the marble cake fills the kitchen with the scent of vanilla and chocolate from the air fryer, there is nothing better than a cup of hot tea alongside it. The vanilla note in the tea lifts the sweet flavour of the cake, while its soft, rounded character creates calm and cosiness at the coffee table. I can warmly recommend Just T Cheek To Cheek Vanilla Brev tea – it is my absolute favourite with marble cake, and the combination is almost too good to be true.

The cake is popular for its combination of flavours and its visual appeal, and it is often served as a simple but delicious dessert or afternoon snack.

Who invented it and where does the cake come from?

The exact origin of marble cake is difficult to determine, but it is believed that the cake has roots in Central Europe, possibly in Germany. Traditionally, marble cake was baked with a combination of chocolate and vanilla, but in some regions people also used coffee, rum or other flavourings to create different variations.

The cake became popular in the 19th century and quickly spread to other parts of Europe and on to North America, where it became part of the classic cake repertoire in many homes.

What variations can you make of the cake?

Marble cake can be adapted in countless ways, depending on taste and preference. Here are some suggestions for variations:

  • Cocoa and orange: Add grated orange zest to the light batter for a fresh citrus note that complements the chocolate flavour.
  • Caramel and vanilla: Use a caramel essence or add small caramelised sugar pieces to the dark batter for a sweet and rich taste experience.
  • Coffee and chocolate: Replace some of the milk in the dark batter with strong coffee for a cake with a rich mocha flavour, perfect for coffee lovers.

What do you serve with the marble cake?

Marble cake is versatile and can be served in many ways depending on the occasion. Here are some suggestions:

  • With whipped cream: A simple dollop of whipped cream can add a light and airy contrast to the rich cake.
  • Vanilla ice cream: Serve the cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a lovely combination of warm cake and cold ice cream.
  • Fresh berries: Fresh berries such as strawberries, raspberries or blueberries can add freshness and a tart contrast to the sweetness of the cake.
  • Chocolate sauce: Pour a warm chocolate sauce over the cake for an extra luxurious dessert.

To make your marble cake extra moist and flavourful, add a spoonful of crème fraîche or Greek yoghurt to the batter. This gives the cake a lovely moistness and a slightly tart undertone. It complements both the vanilla and chocolate flavours perfectly.
