Apple fritters in the air fryer are a classic sweet treat, traditionally made by dipping apple slices in batter and deep-frying them. But what if you could get that same crispy, juicy experience without using a deep fryer? That’s where the air fryer comes in as a fantastic alternative. Making apple fritters in an air fryer gives you a light, crispy dessert that uses less oil but still has plenty of flavour.

Why make apple fritters in the air fryer?

The air fryer has become a popular choice in many Danish kitchens, and it’s not without reason. It offers a healthier way to cook your favourite dishes, including apple fritters.

Benefits of using an air fryer for apple fritters:

I recommend this fruity cider for our crispy apple fritters

These warm apple fritters are a real classic, and they taste even better with a good Nordic cider on the side. I can highly recommend Andersen Winery Galadriel sparkling apple and elderflower wine – it’s a fantastic match for the warm fruit. Enjoy!

  • Less oil, which makes the dessert lighter and healthier.
  • Quick preheating time, so you can make apple fritters in no time.
  • Easy to clean after use, since there’s no oil everywhere.
  • Even cooking, which ensures the apples get a crispy exterior and soft interior.

Where do apple fritters come from?

Apple fritters originated in France and are a classic French dessert. The word “beignet” means “fried batter” and is known all over the world, especially in countries with French influence such as Canada and parts of the United States. Beignets can be made with different fillings, but apple fritters are especially popular for their simple ingredients and easily recognisable flavour.

In Denmark, using local ingredients is a long-standing tradition, which is why Danish apples are the perfect ingredient for this dish. Denmark’s apple season typically runs from August to November, when Danish apples like Ingrid Marie and Elstar are at their best. These apples have a sweet, slightly tart flavour that pairs perfectly with the sweet batter.

Can you make them with a twist?

Even though traditional apple fritters are fantastic, you can easily add a twist to the recipe to experiment with flavour and texture. Here are a few ideas:

  • Spices in the batter
  • The apple filling
  • Add nuts or dried fruit
  • Use other fruits
  • Serve with different accompaniments

Try freezing the apple slices for 15-20 minutes before cooking. This helps the apples hold their structure so they don’t turn too soft during cooking, giving a lovely contrast between the crispy exterior and the apples’ firm texture.

What to serve with apple fritters in the air fryer?

Apple fritters can be served in many different ways, depending on whether you want a simple dessert or a more indulgent experience.

Classic serving suggestions:

  • Dust them with icing sugar and a pinch of cinnamon, which brings out the apples’ natural sweetness.
  • Serve them with vanilla ice cream. The cold ice cream complements the warm fritters and creates a great contrast.
  • Try them with whipped cream, optionally flavoured with a little vanilla or cinnamon.

Modern serving ideas:

  • A spoonful of Greek yoghurt or crème fraîche gives a tangy contrast to the sweet fritters.
  • Melted caramel or chocolate sauce can be drizzled over the fritters to add a little extra indulgence.
  • Fresh berries, such as blueberries or raspberries, also complement the fritters nicely. They add both colour and freshness.

Conclusion

Making apple fritters in the air fryer is a fun and healthier way to enjoy a classic dessert. With Danish apples like Ingrid Marie and Elstar, along with a light, airy batter, you can create a delicious autumn treat that’s both easy to make and fantastic to eat. There’s also plenty of room to experiment with different flavours and serving ideas, so you can tailor the apple fritters to your exact taste.

Apple fritters in the air fryer are a versatile dessert that both kids and adults can enjoy. Whether you serve them with icing sugar, ice cream, or something else entirely, these crispy apple fritters will quickly become a favourite on the dessert table. The air fryer makes it easy to make them at home without the hassle of deep-frying oil, and you still get wonderful crispiness and flavour.
