Why make Baked Alaska in the air fryer?

Making Baked Alaska in an air fryer offers several advantages. First, the air fryer is faster than a traditional oven and often requires no preheating, which significantly reduces the cooking time. In addition, the air fryer provides even heat distribution that ensures the meringue turns perfectly golden without melting the ice cream inside. It’s an efficient, time-saving method that still delivers an impressive result.

What kind of dessert is Baked Alaska?

Baked Alaska is a spectacular dessert consisting of a core of frozen ice cream surrounded by a soft cake base and covered with a thick layer of meringue. The whole thing is quickly baked or torched so the meringue turns golden while the ice cream core stays frozen. This contrast between warm and cold, soft and firm, makes the dessert a true delight.

Where does Baked Alaska come from?

The history of Baked Alaska spans centuries and continents. It’s often said that the dessert was invented to celebrate the purchase of Alaska in 1867, but similar recipes existed long before that. What makes Baked Alaska special, beyond its taste, is its ability to impress and amaze guests with its warm meringue and cold ice cream core.

Preparation techniques for Baked Alaska

The key to a successful Baked Alaska in the air fryer is to freeze the ice cream hard enough before covering it with meringue, and to make sure the meringue is evenly distributed around the ice cream to insulate it completely. This ensures that the ice cream stays frozen while the meringue gets a beautiful, golden surface.

What flavor variations of Baked Alaska can you make?

  • Chocolate and peppermint: Replace the traditional vanilla ice cream with chocolate ice cream and add a layer of crushed peppermint for a refreshing twist.
  • Tropical fruit: For a lighter variation, you can use mango or pineapple ice cream and add a layer of fresh fruit between the ice cream and the cake base. This gives a sweet and tangy taste experience that’s perfect for summer.
  • Coffee and caramel: Use coffee ice cream and add a drizzle of caramel on top of the ice cream before applying the meringue. This adds a depth and richness to the dessert that coffee lovers will adore.

For an extra festive variation, you can drizzle a little alcohol over the cake base before the ice cream is placed on top.
