Why Make Butter Chicken in the Airfryer at All?
The airfryer has become a fixture in many Danish homes, and for good reason. It offers a range of benefits that make it quick and easy to prepare meals. But why choose to make Butter Chicken specifically in an airfryer?
Here are some of the benefits:
I Recommend This Aromatic Riesling for Our Creamy Butter Chicken
Butter chicken has plenty of flavor and creaminess, which calls for a wine with a certain sweetness and freshness to balance the spices. I warmly recommend Kendall-Jackson Riesling 2022, Vintner’s Reserve – it creates a fantastic balance in the meal. Enjoy your meal!
- Healthier Cooking: By using an airfryer, you can reduce the amount of oil that would normally be used in a recipe like Butter Chicken. The airfryer uses hot air to cook the food, resulting in a crispy surface without adding unnecessary calories.
- Time-Saving: Traditionally, Butter Chicken takes quite a while to prepare due to the slow simmering of the sauce and the marinating of the chicken. With an airfryer, however, you can cook the chicken much faster while still achieving great flavor.
- Less Mess: Many recipes require several pots and pans, but with an airfryer you can minimize the number of utensils used in the process, making cleanup easier.
These benefits make the airfryer worth considering if you want to try a new approach to making Butter Chicken – especially on busy weekdays, when quick and easy cooking is a must.
Where Does Butter Chicken in the Airfryer Come From?
Butter Chicken, also known as Murgh Makhani, was originally invented in Delhi, India, in the mid-20th century. The dish was created by combining leftover tandoori chicken with a rich tomato-based sauce made with butter and cream. The result was a creamy, flavorful dish that quickly became popular around the world.
The modern airfryer version is naturally a reinterpretation, but it retains the same essential flavors that made the original so popular. By making Butter Chicken in an airfryer, you get a similar flavor experience with a slightly crispier texture on the chicken pieces. While the dish may not be entirely authentic compared to the original recipe, the airfryer makes it possible to cook the chicken in a quick and healthy way.
Can You Use Other Meat or Vegetables in the Dish?
One of the fantastic things about Butter Chicken is that it’s incredibly adaptable. While chicken is traditionally the main ingredient, it’s possible to experiment with other types of meat and vegetables, which makes the dish suitable for different taste preferences and dietary needs. Here are some ideas for alternative ingredients:
Alternative Types of Meat
- Danish Chicken: As a starting point, it’s recommended to use Danish chicken, as it’s local and of good quality. But if you want some variation, there are several options.
- Lamb: For a richer and more robust flavor, you can use lamb, preferably from Danish farms. Lamb pairs well with the strong spices in the dish and becomes wonderfully tender in the sauce.
- Pork: While unorthodox, pork can also be used, especially tenderloin. Pork absorbs the sauce well and adds a different dimension to the dish.
- Tofu or Paneer: For a vegetarian version, you can use either tofu or paneer, an Indian fresh cheese that can easily be found in specialty stores or larger supermarkets. Both absorb the sauce well and provide a protein-rich dish that satisfies even meat lovers.
Vegetables That Go Well With It
- Bell Peppers: The sweet and crunchy bell peppers add both color and a slightly tangy flavor to the dish.
- Eggplant: Eggplant is great at absorbing flavor and works well in a creamy sauce like this one.
- Cauliflower: Cauliflower can be used as a substitute for chicken in vegetarian versions. It has a good texture that works well in the airfryer.
Try adding a few drops of honey or a little sugar to the sauce. That small touch of sweetness brings out the spices and balances the natural acidity from the tomatoes, giving you an even more harmonious flavor.

- Naan Bread: The classic Indian bread that can be dipped in the sauce to soak up all the delicious flavors.
- Rice: Basmati rice is a great choice, but jasmine rice can also be used. The rice’s soft texture perfectly complements the creamy sauce.
- Chapati: A healthier alternative to naan that can also be used as a scoop to catch the sauce.
- Raita: A yogurt dressing with cucumber and spices that provides a lovely fresh contrast to the spicy butter chicken.
- Mango Chutney: The sweet and tangy chutney pairs well with the dish and adds an extra layer of flavor.
