Why Make Chicken nuggets in the Air Fryer?

When people talk about chicken nuggets, most immediately think of fast food or the deep-fried versions you can buy at the supermarket. But with an air fryer, you can make your own crispy chicken nuggets at home. And what’s more, it’s a much healthier way to do it.

One of the biggest benefits of making chicken nuggets in the air fryer is the reduction in oil.

While deep-frying requires large amounts of oil, an air fryer uses only a minimal amount. This results in a lower calorie content and a healthier dish. Naturally, without you losing the crispiness and flavour that make chicken nuggets so delicious. The machine works by circulating hot air around the food, which means the food cooks evenly and becomes crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside.

Additionally, cooking time in an air fryer is often shorter than with traditional oven or pan-frying. Chicken nuggets can be ready in as little as 10-12 minutes, which makes this method ideal for a busy weekday. It’s a quick and easy solution when you need a kid-friendly dinner.

What should you drink with it?

What do you drink with crispy chicken nuggets? I’d definitely recommend a cold lemonade. The bitterness in a lemon water like this cuts perfectly through the crispy and salty, and gives a fantastic balance.

Where does the dish come from?

Chicken nuggets, as we know them today, have a relatively short history. Although people have eaten fried chicken pieces for many centuries, the modern chicken nugget only became popular in the mid-20th century. It was American food scientist Robert C. Baker who, in 1963, developed what we today call a chicken nugget. He found a way to shape chicken meat, bread it, and then cook it without the breading falling off during frying.

Baker worked at Cornell University and wanted to create a new chicken dish. It had to be quick and easy to prepare, and able to appeal to the American consumer. His invention quickly became popular and spread rapidly to fast food chains, where McDonald’s in particular helped turn chicken nuggets into a worldwide sensation. McDonald’s introduced their “Chicken McNuggets” in the 1980s. Since then, the dish has actually been a permanent part of their menu.

The rapid spread of chicken nuggets can largely be attributed to their versatility and ability to satisfy both children and adults. Nuggets are easy to eat, practical, and can be combined with various dips and sides.

What variations can you make of Chicken nuggets in the air fryer?

Chicken nuggets are an incredibly versatile dish, and there are many ways to adapt them. They suit different taste preferences and diets. Here are some of the most popular variations you can consider:

  • Spicy chicken nuggets in the air fryerIf you like your chicken nuggets with an extra kick, you can add various spices to the breading. Paprika, cayenne pepper, or chilli flakes can give a delicious, spicy flavour that takes your nuggets to the next level. You can also add a few drops of hot sauce to the eggs before breading the chicken pieces, to intensify the heat.
  • Cheese-marinated chicken nuggetsFor those who love cheese, you can make a cheese marinade for your nuggets. You can dip the chicken pieces in a mixture of grated parmesan and spices before breading. The cheese will melt and create an extra crispy, flavourful crust that makes the nuggets even more irresistible.
  • Gluten-free nuggetsIf you or someone in your family is gluten intolerant, it’s easy to make a gluten-free version of chicken nuggets. Use gluten-free breadcrumbs or crushed cornflakes instead of regular breadcrumbs. This variation still gives a crispy texture while being suitable for people who can’t tolerate gluten.
  • Vegetarian nuggetsAlthough chicken nuggets are traditionally made from chicken, there are also vegetarian and vegan alternatives to this dish. Many choose to use tofu or seitan as a replacement for chicken. These plant-based alternatives can be breaded and cooked in the same way as chicken nuggets, giving a crispy and flavourful vegetarian version of the popular dish.
  • Asian chicken nuggetsIf you want to add an Asian twist to your chicken nuggets, you can marinate the chicken pieces in soy sauce, ginger, and garlic before breading. This gives a rich, umami flavour that pairs perfectly with a soy sauce or sweet chilli sauce dip. You can also add sesame seeds to the breading for extra texture and flavour.
  • Panko breadingA simple but effective variation is to replace regular breadcrumbs with panko breadcrumbs, a Japanese type of breadcrumb that gives an even crispier texture. Panko nuggets are perfectly crispy without being heavy, and they’re a hit with both kids and adults.

A little tip for extra juicy chicken nuggets is to marinate the chicken pieces in buttermilk for at least 30 minutes before breading. The buttermilk makes the chicken more tender and adds a slightly tangy flavour that gives extra depth to the dish, while also helping the breading stick better
