Why make honey cake in the air fryer?

Honey cake in the air fryer is known for its soft, moist texture, which suits the precise heat distribution of an air fryer perfectly. This method ensures the cake bakes evenly without the risk of drying out. In addition, the baking time is often shorter, which gives you more time to enjoy the result with family and friends.

By baking in the air fryer, you can also experiment with different types of cake pans and create everything from small individual honey cakes to larger versions for sharing. This gives you flexibility and the chance to adapt the cake to different occasions.

As the finishing touch to your honey cake with buttercream in the air fryer, I recommend a good cup of Freehand Amor filter coffee. It has a full-bodied flavour with notes of dark chocolate that play perfectly against the warm spices of the honey cake and the sweet buttercream.

Benefits of the air fryer for honey cake

  • Even heat distribution gives perfectly baked cakes.
  • The option to adjust portions as needed.
  • Shorter baking time compared with a conventional oven.

Honey cake as a European Christmas tradition

Honey cake in the air fryer is not just a cake; it is part of an age-old tradition with roots in both European culture and Christmas cosiness. In Denmark, honey cake is particularly associated with Christmas, when it is often served as a sweet treat with gløgg (Danish mulled wine) or coffee.

This cake captures the essence of the warm spices of Christmas, such as cinnamon and ginger. The aroma of honey cake baking brings back memories of childhood joy and time together as a family. The soft texture and rich flavour make it a favourite on the Christmas table.

The role of honey cake in cosy moments

  • Served with gløgg or tea on dark winter evenings.
  • Used as a dessert at Christmas lunches.
  • Part of the cosy rituals of Christmas baking together with the family.

Where does honey cake come from?

The origins of honey cake can be traced all the way back to ancient Greece and Rome, where honey was used as a sweetener in breads and cakes. Later, honey cake became an integral part of medieval European cuisine, especially in monasteries, where monks refined the recipe with spices that arrived via the Silk Road.

In Denmark, honey cake has been part of Danish food culture since the Middle Ages. The traditional Christiansfeld honey cakes in particular have held on to the original methods, in which the dough was stored for several months to develop its flavour.

Historical facts about honey cake

  • Medieval recipes used honey as a preservative.
  • Spices such as cinnamon and ginger were added to symbolise wealth and luxury.
  • Honey cake was often used as a gift or as part of religious ceremonies.

How do you get the best result?

To get a perfect honey cake in the air fryer, it is important to focus on a few key elements.

Tips for the best result

  • Ingredients: Use local produce, such as Danish honey and freshly ground spices, for a deep and authentic flavour.
  • Batter consistency: The batter should be smooth and runny enough to fill the pan evenly.
  • Baking time: Keep an eye on the cake while it bakes, as air fryers can vary in power. Use a skewer or a toothpick to test whether the cake is done.
  • Cooling: Let the cake cool completely before you decorate it, so the glaze doesn’t melt.

Variants of honey cake

Although the classic honey cake is a favourite, you can experiment with different flavour variations and ingredients to create something unique.

Possible variations

Try adding a little strong coffee to the batter – about 1-2 tbsp. The deep bitterness of the coffee balances the sweetness of the honey and the spices, and brings out their flavour.

Alternative decorations for honey cake in the air fryer

The decoration is an important part of how the honey cake is presented, and here you can really let your creativity bloom.

Decoration ideas

  • Classic buttercream: Spread a layer of buttercream on top and sprinkle with chopped almonds.
  • Chocolate glaze: Coat the cake with a dark chocolate glaze and decorate with edible gold dust or sprinkles.
  • Icing sugar dusting: Keep it simple with a light dusting of icing sugar and small sugar figures.
  • Marzipan and fondant: Create a Christmas cake by covering the cake with rolled marzipan and decorating with Christmas motifs.

Conclusion on honey cake in the air fryer

Baking honey cake in an air fryer is not only a modern approach, but also a way to create an authentic and flavourful experience. The combination of the air fryer’s efficient heat distribution and the timeless flavour of honey cake makes it a guaranteed success. Whether you stick to the classic version or experiment with new variations and decorations, honey cake is a sure winner in the cosy setting of Christmas.

FAQ

Which pan should I use for honey cake in the air fryer?

Use an 18 cm springform pan that fits in the basket with a little air around it. In a 15 cm pan the cake comes out taller and needs to bake 5–10 minutes longer.

How do I know when the honey cake is done?

Insert a skewer into the centre after 25–30 minutes at 160 °C. If it comes out clean, the cake is done. If the top gets too dark, lay foil over it and fold it tightly around the pan.

How long does the honey cake keep?

It keeps covered in the fridge for up to 3 days because of the buttercream. Take it out about 30 minutes before serving so the buttercream softens. You can also freeze it for up to 3 months.
