Why make Shepherd’s Pie in the air fryer?

Cooking Shepherd’s Pie in an air fryer may seem untraditional, but there are several good reasons to choose this method. First, the air fryer significantly reduces the cooking time, which is a great advantage in a busy everyday life. Second, the air fryer gives the pie an unbeatable crispy surface that can be hard to achieve in a regular oven without overcooking the bottom layers.

Where does Shepherd’s Pie come from?

Shepherd’s Pie, also known as “Shepherd’s Pie”, has roots that go back to the 18th century in Britain. The dish was invented as a practical way to use up the leftovers from the Sunday roast. The name “Shepherd’s Pie” was used because the dish is traditionally made with lamb, which is a shepherd’s primary livestock. Over time, the dish has evolved and adapted to local ingredients and flavor preferences, but its essence as an economical and nourishing dish has remained intact.

I recommend this fantastic red wine for our delicious Shepherd’s Pie

For a classic and hearty Shepherd’s Pie with lamb and creamy mashed potatoes, a spicy red wine pairs perfectly. I can especially recommend the Huyendo del Jabalí Syrah 2022, whose notes of dark berries and spices enhance the dish’s deep umami flavor. Enjoy your meal!

What flavor profile does a Shepherd’s Pie have?

Shepherd’s Pie is known for its rich, umami flavor, which mainly comes from the juicy, tender meat and the rich stock. The deep flavor of tomato purée and Worcestershire sauce adds a layer of complexity, while the soft and creamy mashed potatoes, often enriched with butter and perhaps even cheese, provide a lovely contrast to the spiced meat filling. Every bite of this pie offers a balance of salt, sweetness, and acidity, which makes the dish a true classic and flavor experience.

What needs to be swapped in the dish to make it a Cottage Pie?

To transform a Shepherd’s Pie into a Cottage Pie, you need to replace the lamb with ground beef. Cottage Pie, which also originates in Britain, uses beef to create a similar yet distinct dish. While the other ingredients and the cooking method remain the same, the beef gives a slightly different flavor profile and turns the dish into a Cottage Pie.

What side dishes go with Shepherd’s Pie?

Side dishes for Shepherd’s Pie can vary, but popular choices include steamed green beans. They add a fresh, slightly bitter contrast to the rich meat filling. A simple mixed salad with a vinaigrette can also be a fresh and tangy complement that cuts through the richness of the dish. For those who want a more traditionally British side, a portion of steamed peas would be ideal, since their sweetness and soft texture complement the salty and hearty pie.

Part of the traditional touch is adding a layer of peas between the meat filling and the mashed potatoes. The peas add a sweet nuance and a beautiful color contrast, making the dish both prettier and more flavorful.
