Cowboy toast in the air fryer is a Danish take on a classic, rustic sandwich that originates from American cowboy culture, where simple and hearty ingredients were essential. This toast has its roots in the old working days on the prairie, where the goal was to make filling meals from just a few ingredients like bread, meat and cheese. The Danish version came about as an easy everyday solution, where the toast was filled with spiced minced beef and melted cheese, and has now been adapted to modern kitchens using the air fryer for a quick and crispy finish.

Ingredients with a Flavor Punch
In this modern version, BBQ sauce and grill seasoning have found their way into the recipe, adding an intense smoky flavor reminiscent of authentic campfire cooking on the prairie. The traditional paprika has been swapped out in favor of these bold flavor boosters. Fresh herbs like thyme, oregano and basil are added to lift the dish with an aromatic freshness that plays perfectly against the heavy flavors of meat and butter-fried onions.
Cheddar cheese is also a key part of the dish, contributing its creamy texture and rich flavor. Together with the crispy toast bread, it creates a harmonious contrast between soft and crunchy that makes every bite irresistible. It’s a sandwich that balances the simple and the luxurious to perfection.
I recommend a cold IPA with your cowboy toast
A proper cowboy toast with plenty of flavor and BBQ needs a worthy match with character. I warmly recommend IPA – Can 44cl – the bitterness of the hops and the fruity notes are exactly the right match for the spiced minced beef. Best regards, Morten.
Try experimenting with a stronger cheese like gouda or emmentaler instead of cheddar. These cheeses melt beautifully, but have a more intense flavor that adds an extra layer of depth and richness to the toast.

A Modern Cooking Method
With the growing popularity of air fryers, cowboy toast has also been adapted to this quick, healthier cooking method. The air fryer gives the toast a perfectly crispy crust without using extra fat.
