What are the benefits of cooking medister sausage in the air fryer? With the right temperature of 180 degrees and a cooking time of just 12-15 minutes, you get a crispy medister with markedly less fat than with traditional frying in a pan. Remember to prick holes in the medister with a fork before cooking – this prevents it from bursting.

  • Less fat: The air fryer uses hot air to cook the food, which means you don’t need to add oil. This markedly reduces the amount of fat in the finished medister sausage.
  • Crispy surface: The air fryer gives the medister sausage a lovely crispy surface without it becoming dry inside.
  • Easy and quick: The air fryer is easy to use and cooks the medister sausage quickly.
  • Healthier alternative: Medister sausage in the air fryer is a healthier alternative to the traditional cooking method in a frying pan or oven.

Rub the medister sausage with spices such as paprika, chili or oregano before cooking. It adds such great flavor!

The History of Medister Sausage: A Danish Classic with Deep Roots

Medister sausage is more than just a dish. It is a true Danish classic with deep roots in Danish food culture. Its history stretches back to the Middle Ages, when this recipe was made from leftover butcher’s meat and spices. Over the centuries, medister sausage has developed into the flavorful dish we know today.

I recommend this delicious Côtes du Rhône for our classic medister sausage

Medister sausage is one of the most flavorful classics from Danish cuisine, and it calls for a wine with both body and fruity depth. A good Côtes du Rhône offers dark berry notes, soft tannins and a light spice that complements the richness of the sausage and the brown gravy perfectly. I can warmly recommend Chateau Maucoil Cote Du Rhone Villages ØKO 2023 – an organic gem from the Rhône Valley that lifts the entire dinner to a new level.

A staple of Danish cuisine:

Medister sausage is a staple of Danish cuisine and is often served for breakfast, lunch or dinner. It can be enjoyed hot or cold, and there are countless different ways to prepare it. The most classic serving is with red cabbage, caramelized potatoes and apple sauce, but medister sausage can also be used in countless other dishes, such as casseroles, salads and on pizza.

More than just food:

For many Danes, medister sausage is more than just food. It is associated with cozy moments with family and friends, and it is a fixed part of traditions such as the Christmas lunch and New Year’s Eve. Medister sausage is part of the Danish identity and a symbol of Danish food culture. I personally love the special version that always shows up at Christmas – namely the Christmas medister. It’s as if every butcher has to have their own variant. So you can really get to try some different flavors and variations of the traditional medister. Yet another reason why I love Christmas!

A healthier version:

In recent years, there has been a focus on making healthier versions of the classic medister sausage. One of the most popular methods is to cook it in an air fryer at 180 degrees for 12-15 minutes. This reduces the amount of fat considerably, and the result is a crispy and delicious medister sausage with a clear conscience. Serve with caramelized potatoes in the air fryer for the perfect Danish meal.

The future of medister sausage:

The popularity of medister sausage remains high, and it is sure to stay a fixed part of Danish cuisine for many years to come. There is no doubt that the Danish classic will continue to evolve and be prepared in new and innovative ways. Here is the latest form: medister sausage in the air fryer

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need to prick holes in the medister sausage before air frying?

Yes, prick the sausage in a few spots with a fork so the steam can escape. This keeps it from bursting while it cooks.

How long should medister sausage cook in the air fryer?

A raw medister sausage usually needs 12–15 minutes at 350°F (180°C). Flip it halfway through for an even, crispy finish on all sides.

Can you cook frozen medister sausage in the air fryer?

Yes, but it’s best to thaw it first for the best results. From frozen, add about 5–8 minutes to the cooking time.

Turn it halfway through cooking if needed for a more even browning.
  • While the medisterpølse cooks, prepare the 500 g potatoes.
Mix the cut potatoes with 2 tbsp olive oil and 1 tsp salt and pepper in a bowl until the potatoes are evenly coated.

Spread them evenly in the basket and continue cooking together with the medisterpølse until they are crispy and golden.

Add 2 tbsp plain flour and stir well until it forms a smooth paste and starts to smell lightly toasted.
  • Gradually add 3 dl beef stock while stirring with a whisk until the sauce starts to thicken and become smooth.
  • Add 1 dl whipping cream and let the sauce simmer for a couple of minutes until it thickens further.
