Why make cheese scrolls in the air fryer?

Using an air fryer to make cheese scrolls has several advantages. First of all, the cooking time is significantly shorter compared to a conventional oven. The air fryer heats up quickly and circulates hot air efficiently, which ensures that the cheese scrolls turn golden and crisp. This is because the air fryer requires very little or no oil at all, which makes the snack healthier. In addition, cleaning an air fryer is often simpler than an oven, which makes the process less of a hassle.

What kind of dish is a cheese scroll?

Cheese scrolls are small, rolled pieces of dough that typically contain cheese and various spices. The dough most often used is pizza dough or puff pastry, which gives a chewy or crisp texture after baking. The cheese scrolls can be varied in size and filling, which makes them ideal both as a snack for one person or as part of a larger serving for many guests.

Which types of cheese can you use in cheese scrolls?

The choice of cheese can vary considerably depending on personal taste and the desired result. Mozzarella is a popular option because of its mild flavour and fantastic melting properties, which makes it ideal for cheese scrolls that you want to be gooey and pull cheese strings. Cheddar is another good choice for those who prefer a more pronounced cheese flavour and a little sharpness. For a deeper flavour profile, you can combine different cheeses such as gouda, parmesan or even blue cheese, which add a more intense note of flavour.

Suggestions for different spices or herbs for variation, e.g. rosemary or basil

To add extra flavour to the cheese scrolls, you can include different spices and herbs. Classic choices include garlic powder and oregano for an Italian twist, while paprika can give a lightly spiced note. Fresh herbs such as rosemary or basil add a fresh and aromatic dimension that can lift the flavour even further. Experiment with combinations such as rosemary and sea salt or basil and black pepper to find your favourite.

Suggestion for another variant with puff pastry for an even crispier texture

A delicious variation on the classic cheese scrolls is to use puff pastry. Puff pastry gives an incredibly crisp and flaky texture that is extremely satisfying to bite into. By swapping the pizza dough for puff pastry, you can create a luxurious version of the cheese scrolls that is perfect for more formal gatherings or when you just want to treat yourself and your guests to something extra special. Fill the puff pastry scrolls with a blend of fine cheeses and perhaps even a little truffle oil for an extra gourmet experience.

To prevent the cheese scrolls from sticking together or to the basket in the air fryer, you can lightly dust the bottom of the basket with a little flour.
