The History of Salisbury Steak

Origin and Development

The Salisbury steak has roots in various cultures, including the USA. But it quickly became popular in Denmark as a simple way to prepare minced meat. Over time, the dish has evolved, and in Denmark it’s especially known as a hearty, filling meal, often served with brown gravy and potatoes (Béarnaise sauce and fries for the younger crowd 😉 Over the years, variations like stuffed Salisbury steaks and spiced versions have found their way into Danish cuisine. That’s what makes Salisbury steak in the air fryer a favourite for both kids and adults.

Classic Salisbury Steak with Bacon in the Air Fryer

A classic Danish Salisbury steak consists of beef mince, simply seasoned with salt and pepper. It’s recommended to use beef mince with a fat percentage of 8-12%. Use good bacon of a decent thickness. This gives you the perfect balance between flavour and juiciness. A lower fat content can result in dry steaks, while a higher fat content can make them too greasy. Danish beef is known for its high quality. It’s always a good idea to buy local, as it’s often fresher and more sustainable.

I recommend this full-bodied red wine for our Salisbury steak with bacon

When bacon and beef are on the menu, you need a wine that can stand up to the salty, rich flavours. I warmly recommend Vinosia Est 2004 Primitivo Salento 2021 Magnum 1.5 L – enjoy the meal!

Ingredients

For the classic Salisbury steak with bacon in the air fryer, you don’t need many ingredients. Beef mince, salt, pepper, and a little oil for frying are enough to make a delicious dish. If you want more flavour, you can add onion or a little paprika.

Method

Shape the steaks into equal-sized portions and press them lightly flat. Wrap bacon around the sides of the steaks. The cooking time depends on the thickness, but make sure they’re golden on the outside and juicy on the inside.

Variations and Twists on Salisbury Steak with Bacon in the Air Fryer

Even though the classic Salisbury steak is always a hit, you can easily jazz it up with different ingredients and cooking methods.

Stuffed Salisbury Steaks

An exciting variation is to stuff the Salisbury steaks. You can experiment with different fillings, such as cheese, mushrooms, or spinach. First, shape two small patties from one portion of mince, place your filling in the centre of one patty, and then cover it with the other. Make sure to press the edges together firmly so the filling doesn’t leak out during cooking. This adds an extra dimension of flavour and a surprise with the first bite. Stuffed Salisbury steaks can be cooked in the oven, in a pan, or in the air fryer.

Serving Suggestions

Salisbury steaks with bacon in the air fryer can be served with classic sides like potatoes and brown gravy, but they also work well with a fresh salad, roasted vegetables, or a homemade burger bun. If you go for the burger style, you can top it with crisp lettuce, pickles, cheese, and a good dressing.

Best Side Dishes for Salisbury Steak with Bacon in the Air Fryer

Side dishes can really elevate a meal. Potatoes in various forms – from mash to oven-roasted – are a classic choice. A crisp coleslaw or grilled vegetables can add freshness and texture to the meal. For a healthier alternative, try serving Salisbury steaks from the air fryer with cauliflower mash or a quinoa salad.

Tips for the Perfect Salisbury Steak with Bacon in the Air Fryer

To make the best Salisbury steak with bacon in the air fryer, there are a few simple tips that can make a big difference. Make sure to choose high-quality meat, preferably Danish, as it has a better flavour. Use a mix of beef mince with 8-12% fat for the best texture. Don’t overwork the mince, as this can make the steaks tough. Let them rest for a few minutes after cooking, so the juices settle nicely into the meat.

When cooking in the air fryer, it’s a good idea to brush the steaks with a little oil to get a crispier surface, but be careful not to use too much oil, as the air fryer already provides a low-fat way of cooking.

A little tip for Salisbury steaks in the air fryer is to add a bit of grated onion or carrot to the mince. It keeps the steaks extra juicy during cooking, while also giving you a natural sweetness and a hidden veggie snack!
