Why Make Shawarma in the Air Fryer?
The air fryer has quickly gained popularity in many homes thanks to its ability to cook food with a crispy texture using minimal oil. Here are some of the main reasons to choose to make shawarma in an air fryer:
Healthier Alternative
The air fryer uses significantly less oil than traditional frying, which makes the shawarma healthier without compromising on flavour. This is especially important for those who want to enjoy their favourite dishes, just a little healthier.
I recommend this flavourful IPA with our spicy shawarma
Homemade shawarma calls for a drink that can stand up to the hot spices. I can warmly recommend the IPA – Can 44cl – the bitterness of the hops goes wonderfully hand in hand with the flavours of the Middle East. Best regards, Morten.
Quick and Easy Preparation
Preparing shawarma in an air fryer is both quick and easy. Marinated chicken or beef can be cooked in just 15-18 minutes, making it possible to prepare a tasty dinner in no time. This is ideal for busy weekdays when time is short.
Consistent Results
One of the great advantages of an air fryer is its ability to deliver consistent results. The chicken pieces cook evenly and develop a lovely crispy surface, ensuring that every bite is just as delicious as the last.
Where does the dish come from?
Shawarma originally comes from the Middle East and has deep roots in Arabic cuisine. The name “shawarma” comes from the Turkish word “çevirme,” which means “to turn,” referring to the traditional method where the meat slowly rotates on a vertical spit.
Over the centuries, the dish has spread to different parts of the world and adapted to local taste preferences. Today, you can find shawarma in many countries, each with their own unique twist on the classic dish. No matter where you find it, shawarma is loved for its spicy flavour and versatility.
What variations of Shawarma can you make?
Shawarma is a versatile dish that can be adapted to taste and preferences. Here are some popular variations:
Chicken Shawarma
The most common variation, where chicken is marinated in a mixture of yoghurt and spices like cumin, paprika and turmeric. Chicken shawarma is known for its juicy and flavourful texture.
Beef Shawarma
This version uses beef, marinated in a similar spice mix to chicken shawarma. Beef shawarma has a richer flavour and is often served with onions and tahini sauce.
Lamb Shawarma
Lamb shawarma is a more luxurious version, where lamb is marinated in aromatic spices. This variation is popular in countries like Lebanon and Israel and offers a unique, powerful flavour.
Vegetarian Shawarma
For those who prefer a plant-based alternative, shawarma can be made with chickpeas, tofu or seitan. These ingredients are marinated and cooked in the same way as the meat variations, resulting in a tasty and filling vegetarian dish.
What do you serve with Shawarma – dips and more?
Shawarma is traditionally served with a range of sides and dips that complement the dish’s rich flavour. Here are some of the most popular:
Hummus
A creamy dip made from chickpeas, tahini, lemon and garlic. Hummus is a classic that pairs perfectly with shawarma and adds a lovely, nutty flavour.
Tahini Sauce
Made from sesame paste, lemon and garlic, tahini sauce is a popular dip for shawarma that gives a slightly bitter and creamy flavour.
Tzatziki
A Greek yoghurt dip with cucumber, garlic and dill. Tzatziki is refreshing and pairs well with the spicy shawarma.
Salad
Shawarma is often served with pickles and a fresh salad of tomatoes, cucumbers and red onions. These sides add a crispy texture and freshness to the dish.
Try adding pickled red cabbage (or pickled red onions) to your shawarma. It can give the dish an extra dimension of flavour and texture. The tangy and slightly sweet taste of pickled red cabbage perfectly complements the spicy and juicy shawarma.
