Why Make Twice-Baked Potatoes in the Air Fryer?

Making twice-baked potatoes in an air fryer has many advantages. First of all, the cooking time is reduced compared to a traditional oven. An air fryer uses circulating hot air to cook food, which means the potatoes become tender inside and crispy outside in less time. This is perfect for busy weekdays, when you want a delicious dish without spending several hours in the kitchen.

Another advantage is the crispy texture an air fryer provides. The hot air circulates around the potatoes and creates an even, crispy surface. This is especially important for twice-baked potatoes, as the filling can be heavy and creamy, and the contrast with a crispy exterior makes the dish more interesting and satisfying.

I Recommend This Spanish Red Wine for Our Twice-Baked Potatoes

For these rich and creamy twice-baked potatoes, I prefer a good, classic red wine with a bit of edge. A Spanish Rioja, with its notes of red berries and vanilla from the barrel ageing, pairs beautifully with both the cheese and the crispy potato skin. I can warmly recommend Martinez Lacuesta crianza 2018 – enjoy!

My choice falls on Martinez Lacuesta crianza 2018, which gives the dish just the right lift.

In addition, the air fryer is also more energy-efficient than a traditional oven. It uses less electricity and heats up the kitchen less, which can be an advantage on hot days or for those who want to reduce their energy consumption.

Where Does the Dish Come From?

Twice-baked potatoes have their roots in American cooking. The dish emerged in the middle of the 20th century, when baked potatoes became popular as a simple, nourishing meal. By scooping the flesh out of the baked potatoes, mixing it with butter, cheese, and other ingredients, and then baking it again — hence the name ‘twice-baked’ — people created a luxurious, filling dish that quickly became a favourite at dinner tables and for festive occasions.

The original version of the dish is relatively simple, but today there are countless variations that reflect the tastes and preferences of different regions. From using different types of cheese to adding herbs or exotic spices, twice-baked potatoes have become a versatile and beloved dish all over the world.

What Variations Can You Make of These Potatoes?

There are almost endless possibilities when it comes to varying twice-baked potatoes. Here are a few examples:

  • Cheese and Bacon: The classic version with cheddar cheese and crispy bacon. You can also try other cheeses like gouda, mozzarella, or blue cheese for different flavour nuances.
  • Vegetarian: Add vegetables like broccoli, spinach, or bell pepper for a healthier version. You can also use plant-based alternatives to butter and cheese.
  • Spicy: Use spices like jalapeños, chilli, or cayenne pepper for a spicy twist. You can also add a little fresh coriander or parsley for extra flavour.

Try adding a touch of garlic powder or freshly chopped garlic to the filling for extra flavour.
