Bread pudding: A cosy dessert for cold autumn evenings

There is something special about making bread pudding in autumn. It is a dessert that not only tastes fantastic but also warms the soul.

Why bread pudding in the air fryer is perfect for autumn

  • Makes use of seasonal fruit: Danish apples are in season, juicy and full of flavour.
  • Warm spices: Cinnamon, nutmeg and cardamom create a warm and inviting aroma.
  • Reduces food waste: A great way to use up day-old bread and minimise waste.
  • The hygge factor: The slow preparation and the scent in the kitchen add to a cosy atmosphere.

I remember how my grandmother always had a bowl of bread pudding ready when the family gathered during the autumn holidays. It wasn’t just the dessert itself, but the whole experience around it that made it special. The children helped cut up the apples, and the grown-ups enjoyed a cup of coffee while the pudding baked in the air fryer.

Try adding a couple of spoonfuls of cream or crème fraîche to the egg and milk mixture. It gives the bread pudding an extra creamy texture.

A Christmas tradition revived

Bread pudding isn’t just for autumn; it also has a special place in Christmas traditions.

Bread pudding as part of Christmas

  • Spices associated with Christmas: In addition to cinnamon, you can add cloves and ginger.
  • Adding dried fruit: Dried cranberries or candied orange peel give it a festive touch.
  • Serving with a festive sauce: A warm vanilla custard or a dollop of risalamande (Danish Christmas rice pudding) on the side.

In my family, we have revived the tradition of serving bread pudding at our Christmas lunches. It is a lovely way to bring something old back and create new memories. The children love decorating the top with nuts and dried fruit, and it quickly becomes a talking point around the table.

Bread pudding variations for every taste

One of the best things about bread pudding is how versatile it is. You can easily adapt it to your own preferences or to whatever you have in your kitchen cupboards.

Possible variations

  • Chocolate bread pudding: Add chocolate pieces for a more decadent version.
  • Nuts and seeds: Chopped walnuts, almonds or sunflower seeds for extra crunch.
  • Different fruits: Pears, plums or even bananas can replace or complement the apples.
  • A boozy twist: A splash of rum or cognac in the mixture for the grown-ups.
  • Spice experiments: Try cardamom, star anise or vanilla for new flavour nuances.

I have tried making a version with dark chocolate and hazelnuts myself, and it was a big hit with my friends. It is all about being creative and not being afraid to try something new.

Create hygge with bread pudding in the air fryer

In a time when everything moves fast and many people are absorbed by technology and screens, it is important to make time for the small things that bring people together.

How bread pudding in the air fryer can add to the hygge

  • Gather the family in the kitchen: Let the children help measure the ingredients and stir the mixture.
  • Set a cosy table: Use candles, nice napkins and perhaps a tablecloth with autumn motifs.
  • Share with others: Invite neighbours or friends over for a cup of tea and a slice of bread pudding.
  • Tell stories: Use the time at the table to share memories or plan upcoming events.

One of my favourite activities is inviting my friends over for a “baking day”, where we make different desserts together and enjoy each other’s company. Bread pudding is always on the menu, and it has become a tradition we look forward to every year.

Conclusion: bread pudding in the air fryer

Bread pudding with apples and raisins is more than just a dessert; it is an experience that brings people together and creates hygge at home. Whether it is a rainy autumn day or a cold winter evening in the run-up to Christmas, this dish is the perfect way to warm both body and soul.

So the next time you have some leftover bread and you are longing for something sweet and cosy, why not try making a bread pudding? It doesn’t take much, but it gives so much back in the form of flavour, aroma and togetherness.

Take the time to enjoy the little moments, and let bread pudding become part of your own traditions. Have fun in the kitchen, and enjoy the hygge.

FAQ

Can you use stale bread?

Yes, bread from yesterday or the day before is actually the best for bread pudding. The slightly dry bread soaks up the egg mixture well without turning mushy. Cut it into cubes and leave it to soak for the 10 minutes, so that it becomes completely saturated.

Can the bread pudding be made the day before?

Yes, you can easily bake it the day before and store it covered in the fridge. When you are ready to serve, warm the portions in the air fryer at 160 °C for 4-5 minutes. Then it tastes almost as if it were freshly baked.

How do you know when the bread pudding is done?

The bread pudding is done when the surface is golden and the middle is firm and does not give way when you press it lightly. At 180 °C it takes 20-25 minutes, but air fryers vary, so check on it after 20 minutes. If you insert a knife into the middle and it comes out clean, it is ready.
