S’mores in the air fryer is my favourite way to make the classic American campfire treat when there is neither a campfire nor good weather in sight. Instead of assembling biscuits, chocolate and marshmallows one at a time, I make it all as a warm dip in an ovenproof dish: chopped chocolate on the bottom and a dense layer of marshmallows on top, which turn golden and soft in the hot air.

The whole thing takes 12 minutes from start to finish, and the dish spends 7 of them in the air fryer. Afterwards it goes in the middle of the table, and everyone dips digestive biscuits down through the marshmallows and the melted chocolate. It’s a dessert that brings people together around the table and is hard to keep your hands off.

Why I love s’mores in the air fryer
Classic s’mores require a campfire and enough patience to toast one marshmallow at a time. The dip version gives you the same combination of golden marshmallow, melted chocolate and crisp biscuit, but without the hassle. I use 100 g of milk chocolate and 100 g of dark chocolate, because the blend strikes the balance between the sweet, American flavour and a deeper cocoa flavour that can stand up to the sweet marshmallows.
The recipe makes 4 servings and needs only four ingredients. Digestive biscuits stand in for the American graham crackers, which are rarely found in Danish supermarkets.
What the air fryer does better than the oven
A s’mores dip can also be made in a regular oven, but for such a small portion it rarely makes sense to heat up a whole oven. The air fryer heats up quickly, and the hot air browns the marshmallows while the chocolate melts underneath. At the same time, the dense layer of marshmallows shields the chocolate from the direct heat, so it melts gently instead of burning.
My kitchen test of s’mores
I tested the s’mores dip in my Cosori Dual Blaze, preheated to 160 °C, and 7 minutes is the sweet spot. It has one basket with heating elements both above and below, which suits this dish well: the heat from below helps the chocolate at the bottom of the dish melt, while the heat from above gives the marshmallows their colour. I always check the colour after 5 minutes, because marshmallows go from golden to burnt quickly, and air fryers brown differently.
I have also made the dip in a Philips XXL, where an ovenproof dish 16-18 cm in diameter fits nicely in the basket with air around it. The preparation takes 5 minutes: the chocolate is roughly chopped, and the marshmallows are cut in half crosswise with kitchen scissors and placed close together with the cut side down.
Dip the kitchen scissors in cold water before you cut the marshmallows. That way they stick less, and you get clean cut surfaces that are easy to place close together in the dish.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
The first mistake is filling the dish to the brim. The marshmallows puff up during baking, so leave some room at the top of the dish, otherwise they can swell over the edge and stick to the basket. The second mistake is using mini marshmallows. They are so light that the hot air can blow them around, so use large marshmallows and place them close together side by side, so they cover the chocolate completely and hold each other in place. The third mistake is walking away from the air fryer for the last few minutes. The top changes colour quickly, so take the dish out as soon as it is golden. Use pot holders, and let the dip cool for a few minutes, because melted marshmallows are very hot.
How to serve s’mores
Serve the dip hot straight from the dish while the chocolate is runny. Put the dish on a trivet in the middle of the table, and set out things to dip around it:
- Digestive biscuits, the Danish stand-in for graham crackers
- Fresh strawberries, which add a little tartness to the sweet dip
- Apple wedges, which add crunch and freshness
- Banana slices, which go well with the melted chocolate
- A sprinkle of flaky salt on top, which brings out the chocolate
If you want to vary the dip, you can use only milk chocolate for a sweeter version, or only dark chocolate if you want it to be less sweet. A spoonful of peanut butter or caramel sauce on top of the chocolate adds extra richness.
Storing and reheating
S’mores dip tastes best freshly baked and warm. If the chocolate firms up while you are eating, the dish can go back in the air fryer for 1-2 more minutes at 150 °C. Leftovers can be stored covered in the fridge for up to 2 days and reheated in the dish in the air fryer at 150 °C for 3-5 minutes, until the chocolate is soft again. The dip is not suitable for freezing.
S’mores in the air fryer is one of those desserts where the effort is small and the payoff is big. Four ingredients, one dish and 12 minutes is all it takes before a warm, golden dip is on the table.
FAQ
The s’mores dip needs 7 minutes at 160 °C in a preheated air fryer. Check the colour after 5 minutes, and take the dish out as soon as the marshmallows are golden, because they go from golden to burnt quickly.
Use an ovenproof dish about 16-18 cm in diameter that fits in the air fryer basket. If you have a small air fryer, you can halve the recipe and use a dish about 12 cm in diameter. Don’t fill the dish to the brim, because the marshmallows puff up during baking.
Digestive biscuits are the obvious substitute and are available in most Danish supermarkets. You can also dip strawberries, apple wedges and banana slices into the warm dip.

Recommended equipment
- 1 Air fryer
- 1 Oven-safe dish - About 16-18 cm in diameter, must fit in the basket
- 1 Cutting board
- 1 Knife
- 1 Kitchen scissors
Shopping list
Ingredients
- 100 g milk chocolate

- 100 g dark chocolate (Preferably 55-70% cocoa)

- 100 g marshmallows (Large, not mini)

- 200 g digestive biscuits (For dipping)
How to make it
Preparation
- Roughly chop 100 g milk chocolate and 100 g dark chocolate.
- Spread the chopped chocolate in an even layer in the bottom of an ovenproof dish about 16-18 cm in diameter that fits in the air fryer basket.
- Cut 100 g marshmallows in half crosswise with kitchen scissors.
- Cover the chocolate with the marshmallows, placed close together side by side with the cut side down, so the chocolate is completely covered. Don’t fill the dish to the brim, because the marshmallows puff up during baking.
Cooking in the air fryer
- Preheat the air fryer to 160 °C fan.
- Place the dish in the air fryer basket and bake at 160 °C for 7 minutes, until the marshmallows are puffed up and golden and the chocolate has melted.
- Check the colour after 5 minutes. Marshmallows go from golden to burnt quickly, so take the dish out as soon as the top is golden.
Serving
- Carefully lift the dish out of the basket with pot holders and set it on a trivet. Let the dip cool for a few minutes, because melted marshmallows are very hot.
- Serve the dip hot straight from the dish with 200 g digestive biscuits for dipping down through the marshmallows and chocolate.
Our notes for the recipe
Keep an eye on the marshmallows from the 5-minute mark. They go from golden to burnt quickly, and air fryers brown differently. Don’t fill the dish to the brim, because the marshmallows puff up during baking. Place them close together so they cover the chocolate completely and hold each other in place in the airflow. Use large marshmallows, because mini marshmallows are so light that the hot air can blow them around. Dip the scissors in cold water so the marshmallows stick less when you cut them. Variation:
Use only milk chocolate for a sweeter, classic American version, or only dark chocolate if you want the dip to be less sweet. A spoonful of peanut butter or caramel sauce on top of the chocolate adds extra richness, and a sprinkle of flaky salt on top brings out the chocolate. Serving:
Serve the dip hot straight from the dish while the chocolate is runny. Digestive biscuits stand in for the American graham crackers, and here everyone dips into the same dish instead of sandwiching the biscuits together as you would at a campfire. Strawberries, apple wedges and banana slices are also good for dipping. If the chocolate firms up along the way, the dish can go back into the air fryer for 1-2 more minutes at 150 °C. Portion size:
If you have a small air fryer, you can halve the recipe and use a dish about 12 cm in diameter.
